This report suggests, among other findings, that:

  • Funders want to know about impact, to understand the difference they make, to learn and to ensure they make the most of their resources.
  • Evaluating impact can help funders plan how their work will make a difference, understand what does and doesn’t work and why, build an evidence base to share with others, thus influencing and informing debate, and increasing the sector’s body of knowledge; improve their work, inspire and motivate staff, trustees and stakeholders, build relationships, raise the profile of their work and leverage other resources.
  • Funders should apply proportionate rigour, be flexible, open and transparent, acknowledge the values of others and recognize that that have something to offer.
